Putting People First: How the studio supports staff wellbeing, as part of the events industry.
The events industry is known for its energy, creativity and making memorable moments, but behind every amazing conference that is executed perfectly, there is a team of professionals behind the scene working incredibly hard to make it all happen. Let’s be honest, particularly over the past few years, the industry hasn’t always been an easy one to be a part of.
Long hours, weekend work, last minute changes and the pressure to deliver can take their toll. In all industries, staff burnout, and mental health challenges have become increasingly recognised as serious issues and the hospitality industry has felt it perhaps a little harder than many.
Why staff wellbeing matters to us
The studio’s success is all due to our amazing, dedicated team. We work hard to give our clients a fantastic experience, and we want our team to feel equally looked after.
The events industry runs on people. While technology and gorgeous venues play their part, it’s the expertise and dedication of our team that truly make the difference between a good event and an exceptional one. When staff are overworked, undervalued and burned out everyone suffers. Service quality diminishes, creativity diminishes and both staff retention and satisfaction take a hit.
Research has shown that investing in employee wellbeing isn’t just the right thing to do ethically, it also makes good business sense. Happy, healthy teams are more productive, more creative and more likely to go the extra mile for clients. They stay with companies longer, which for us means our team get to know our clients better, meaning a more personalised experience.
Creating an environment where staff feel valued, where their wellbeing is taken seriously and where there is genuine support when the team need it, is so important.
What are we doing to support our team?
Our team are a bunch of amazing individuals, with different lifestyles, needs and are all looking for different things when it comes to work. With this in mind, we have a variety of different contracts, hybrid working where practical and flexible working. We have a family friendly policy which team members that want it, have school holidays off, and we close for Christmas, so all the team get some time to relax with their families after a hectic few weeks.
Mental health support is something we are passionate about, and encouraging an open culture where team members feel safe to express when they need help. We have trained Mental Health First aiders on hand to offer a listening ear and guidance in the workplace. We also give the team access to an 24-7 Employee Assistance Programme, which gives confidential support on a range of issues from mental health issues, to financial advice.
Recognising that wellbeing extends beyond the workplace, we offer staff discounts on an online market place, helping the team enjoy themselves outside of work, without breaking the bank. The team also have free access to a fitness and health app which gives tools to look after their physical wellbeing, whether through workouts, meditations or health tracking. Perhaps most importantly, we have a right to disconnect policy and we encourage the team to protect their work-life balance. It’s a holistic approach which acknowledges staff are whole people with lives, health and needs that extend beyond the events they deliver.
Looking Forward
The events industry will always have its unique challenges, there will always be late nights, weekend work and moments of high pressure. That shouldn’t come at the expense of staff wellbeing. When we invest in our people, create supportive cultures and build sustainable ways of working, we aren’t just doing the right thing, we are building better businesses that will thrive for years to come.
As the industry continues to evolve, anything we can do to promote wellbeing in out teams will be good for them, the business and the industry as a whole. The best events aren’t just created in beautiful spaces with perfect logistics, they are created by teams of happy, healthy professionals who feel valued and supported in their work.
And that’s something worth celebrating!
